I've been seriously kicking around getting another mic for a different sound I am in love with my C414 II but my guitarist has a brighter and thinner voice than our singer But I don't want to buy another $1000 mic or even a $500 one for that matter(atleast not right now). But for $300 or less I'd mos def look into it. What are the characteristics of the MXL (either)? My 3000B & C414 both have similar characteristics. Would like someting a bit darker I guess.

The V67G has a nice dark tone. Not too dark, but not bright, like a 414 or NT1. Great on bright voices. $99. Get a pair.

Hi, looking for reviews of the 4000 (I already bought one, didn't have the chance to try it yet) i stumbled upon this, and wanted to share my humble experience on this subject.
I can tell you that the V67G is an excelent choice in your situation. I have both the 414 and the V67, and, here in my house, and in the studio, it is always the 414 or the v67 as the two alternatives on vocals, and where the 414 doesn't match with the vocal, the v67 surely does, and vice versa. like sscannon says, great dark tone, but not dull at all. I like it a lot.

It is the best alternative for the 414, in my opinion (besides, of course, a U87). And it is ECONOMIC.

Sorry for my poor english, greetings from Argentina

I found the V67 to do surprisingly well with Rap guys. I was using a couple of Neumans but never liked the vocals until I tried the 67. I agree with sscannon, great dark tone.

I have two 604 models and the V69. The 604 is like the 603 except with a pad and a low cut.

I did a mod to one of mine that swapped out the cheap caps for Panasonics and the difference was pretty big. It really took the edge off the highs. I left one stock and it sounds good as well, but I'll probably mod it.

The V69 is really good. Spend a couple bucks and put a good 12AT7 in it. Groove Tubes are good and are cheap. Some people spend a few bucks for Telefunken.

Note - the 12AX7 is not the same as the 12AT7.

I also had the MXL 3000 but it didn't do it for me.

Wow, that's cool, I have a pair of 603's I use for drum overheads. Can post instructions or links on how to mod them?

UPDATE: I think I found it here...

Justin,

I can send you the parts to do the mod if you want. I had to order more then I would use because of digikey's minimums

The mod is the Gus Smally mod

Wow, do you have enough left over parts to do two 603s? Sure, I'd love to buy them of you and give it a whirl. My email is justin@jyaf.com

Thanks Noah - really nice of you to do that. This mod was posted a while ago from the reading I've been doing, some hear little difference, some hear a real difference so I'm excited to try it and see what I notice. I've been using the 603s for drum overheads and acoustic guitar. The way I like to think of them is creating a stereo image for the mid to high frequencies. They are bright at the very top end, maybe too bright and perhaps not as much clarity as other high end mics. My practice in micing drums with them is to almost always roll off the low end and fill in with my direct mics for the "meat" of the sounds. The 603s do a good job all-in-all.

Do you have any other comments about the mod?
