That's what it sounds like all day all night - a cicada bug noise, or maybe a tree frog. If you concentrate on it, it can drive you crazy. The doctor says there is no wax and the ears looks fine. Check the word "tinnitus" in a search engine of your choice. And whatever you do, wear those ear muffs when you do noisy work, although I have worn them for years too. It's been about 3 weeks now. Will it ever stop? Who knows! I can't hear it when I'm in the shower. I guess my specialty will be making those mood tapes - and everyone will have running water in the background. If anything happens that can help anyone else, I'll let you know. Take care of your ears!

Carl, my brother got really drunk one day and had his sony walkman on and the volume cranked. Ever sinse then he says he hears what he describes as "crickets" constantly.
Have you had a hearing test? It well let you know how well your hearing in % per ear.

Every time you expose your ears to high SLP your doing damage. My ears well ring loudly if I don't cover them in high spl situations. No way around it.

Jeremy, the thing is that I haven't done anything out of the ordinary the last few weeks. Yes, I cut the lawn and I operated the chainsaw etc. but I always put my ear muffs on - the extra strength ones. As I write, the noise is just roaring and it really worries me. I will see if I can make an appointment with a specialist, this week. I hope this is a passing thing. You wouldn't believe what it does to your way of looking at life. Hope none of you ever have to go through this. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, I guess. Thanks for the concern.

I hear those bugs too. For a while I only noticed it when trying to go to bed. I actually thought that it was cicadas until I realized that the windows were closed and it was too early in the year for them. Now I can hear the noise any time I concentrate on it.
High blood pressure and age can bring on tinitus without being exposed to high audio levels. Do a search of the web and you'll see that it is a very common malady, sorry to say.
I would check with your doctor to see if it is treatable in your case. Too often, it is not.

Carl,

I second the motion to get a hearing exam from a qualified Audiologist. I got the full treatment last year. Based on their test (which presents a range of sinewave frequency tones at a variety of amplitudes - down to nearly 0), my right ear is good to about 15K and my left to about 9K. I'm right handed and as a teenager fired a lot of rifles and shotguns. According to them, this was probably the greatest contributor to the HF hearing loss in the left-ear (it's always the ear opposite the trigger finger because it's face toward the barrell when the weapon discharges).

I wonder how this disparity might effect my ability to produce really high quality stereo mixes. I'm only really beginning to do much mixing now but I comfort myself with the knowledge that many great engineers have lost portions of their HF hearing, yet still manage to produce masterpieces.

Anyway, my real problem is that if I sleep on my right side (i.e. right ear on the pillow), I cannot hear the Crickets outside -).

I've had real concerns about my hearing for a while now. My dad was stone deaf for a few years before he passed, so I'm kinda expecting the same. I'm fortunate enuf to have a really good assistant engineer with young ears and a real good head on his shoulders, so I feel confident in runnig mixes by him for a quick "reality" check. So far so good. But I gotta say, "Man, it SUCKS growin' old!!!"

I had my hearing checked b/c I heard a constant ringing for aobut 3 weeks.

Aspirin can cause temporary problems w/ your ears. Have you been taking a lot of aspirin, lately?

Earlier this summer the high pitched squeal would come momentarily and I would concentrate on it, and believe it or not, it would go away. Well, it's come to stay. We have an air filtre unit in the hall outside our bedroom which is about as loud as the air conditioners in Holiday Inn. We use it because my daughter has allergies. I unpluggged it at 3 am. Maybe it has had something to do with it. I'm not taking aspirin, Chris, but my wife has me on different kinds of vitamins (maybe I should stop taking anything). So, Chris, I guess the squeal in your ear went away. Did you do anything to make it go away? Any idea what caused it? Meanwhile, I'm going to a chiropractor this week and calling to see if I can get acupuncture and for sure, see an audiologist. I'd have an elephant sit on my head if it would do any good - it would get results, I'm sure. If you are reading this and you don't have anything like this, just enjoy the silence, for me, please. It does "suck" growing older, but I think it was one of your past presidents who said, "Growing old beats all the alternatives!"
Cheers,
CB

Carl,

That sucks!

I have noticed threw the progression of equnoxes that 'many' of my friends have developed the same sort of problems. My dad if he is uptight can't hear or think, but if he's calm he can do both quite well.

For the AC noise, I'd take a wild guess and say that you hear that almost all night and 'try' to put it out of your mind, till 3am. Could you be getting more uptight as the night goes on and need to relax your brain? Let it drop, relax and expand your blood vessals in your head to keep the blood flow, flowing. I know this might sound like bunk, but I hear it does work for migrains, buzzing/ringing in the ear, hearing in general and thinking. It's part of a disaplan called tensor thought, a relaxed eye sees better than a stressed eye, same with the brain.

Pain pills (downers), coffie and the worst, worry constrict the blood flow.

Relaxation/meditation/peace, exercise, fresh air, a small uncooked beet/niason, humor and of course thc help the blood vessals to open up and let the brain relax and work as it should.

A little stress makes it harder to smell the roses, if it continues, it gets harder to even 'see' the roses.

I know, I know, your all saying get back into your tepee and eat your brown rice and sprouts, and don't give our kids any pot!

H.

Hey Carl,

Yeah, the ringing did stop and it hasn't reoccurred since. Like yours, it would come and go.

You'd be smart to see a doctor. That's who told me about the aspirin.

When the ringing started, I kept trying to think of loud noises that I had been exposed. I couldn't really think of any except 1 time I had the guitar turned up a little too loud. By I kind of knew in my heart that that wasn't the problem. I used to play A LOT louder.

As for how it started>>>> I started swimming about 3/4 of a mile every day. I was out of practice so my muscles were sore. I also got drunk a few times when my brother was in town. I know.. really classy. It was the aspirin I was taking for hangover/soreness.

You might check on those vitamins. My doc may have mentioned some sort of herbal supplement or vitamin that could cause the problem. I wasn't really paying attention to that part, b/c I don't take vitamins. But I seem to vaguely remeber him mentioning some herb or something. You should check it out

Anyway, GOod luck.
