I am having a strange intermittent problem. About 4-5 times in an 8 hour session the most horrible 2-3 second static noise burst comes through both A and B outputs as well as the Headphone out on the board. It does NOT print to tape or hard drive but if I am recording with headphones on it literally will drop you to your knees it is so sudden and loud. I am also having a distortion problem in one side of my onboard headphones not duplicated in monitor B outputs. It sounds like some kind of a discharge. Maybe a bad card? Any info would help. I am recording to an ALESIS HD24 using 3 adat cards and using an APOGEE wordclock cable with DA7 as master at 48k. Thanks.

Bryan,

This seems like a simple setup...

There was an early run of bad RAMSA ADAT cards that would not function properly at both 44.1 and 48K fs.

Also try using the ADAT lightpipe connection as the source of Wordclock sync by selecting one of the SLOTS that has a [LOCK] status in the mixers D-I/O Input Set Window. Position the cursor over the soft button and press [ENTER].

This condition seems like its wordclcock related and could be hardware, cables or both.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply maric. I'll try using the optical ADAT wordclock and see what happens. Since I've recorded this current project using the DA7 as wordclock master am I able to just switch Clock to ADAT on the tracks I've recorded or are they married to the original Clock setup? I'm not quite up to speed in my knowledge of clocking issues. I was curious about this as I take the tracks from the HD24 and import them into Protools LE for mixing. I seem to lose some quality of sound doing this but I need the editing capabilities. A mastering engineer friend of mine suggested that the different clock would affect the sound quality (as does the PT summing bus etc.) Anyway thats another post \:\)
I just want to get through a session without having a heart attack from this Horrible static thing.
Thanks

Bryan,

Its not advisable but, you can chage clock sources on the fly.

The mixer will display an "error" flag and the audio will usually distort and drop out.

In other words the sync is NOT imbedded in the data.

If there are other devices connected digitally to the mixer i.e. reverbs or DAT/Masterlinks they too could be the source of the problem...

good luck again...

I did notice the extreme low level high end ticks that get recorded when wordclock drops (I accidently recorded a few tracks without checking the HD24 clock setting which had reset to default.) I did notice that the DA7 does not like it when you switch clocks on the fly. I record on location with a very simple setup. Mics-Da7-HD24. No other outboard gear but an analog headphone amp coming out of output B for overdubs. I've done 2 CD's with this setup and had the same Static problem. I guess I'll have to wait till the next session to really get a good run through with a different clock.
Thanks Maric

Bryan,
while searching for the solution you may want to throw a brick wall limiter on your headphone
output to reduce the pain and damage to you and yours.......

Jeff,

I don't have the serial numbers of the defective cards, but...

Last time I checked e-bay; factory sealed WR-ADAT cards were around $99.00. I would think that any N.I.B., DA7 cards currently available would have to be newer (updated) inventory.

And although you can probably get the card repaired...I would look into picking up a spare or two if you intend to keep the mixer for a little while longer.

Maric,
Good Idea... I ahve 2 DA7s and its probably smart thinking anyway. Its only the one I have at home that I have any problems with. Thanks for the input.
