Looks like I'm going for the big upgrade from Mix to HD2 with the Massive Pack and 192 IO. Why! well mix is not getting supported....no more ADAT bridge, plugin deals only for HD (the Massive pak is a great deal), new plugins are draining DSP power (1 chip per plugin on some). Big reason my clients are starting to ask (hinting) when will I go HD.
So if I go the HD where does the DA7 stand. I know that 96 kHz will be an issue.
Does the DA7 work well with HD?
Will the 7 sound better going through the 192 IO box?
How does the digital conversion chain work?
I could go on, but you know what I mean. Is the PT HD compatible with the DA 7.

The DA7 only supports rates up to 48k, end of story. You can still use it as an analog monitor and perhaps interface it with HD to monitor your 44.1 bounces, but that's about it.

Hardly a waste of money Jeremy. Benefits of Protools HD are:

- rock solid industry standard, compatible with the pros
- much much higher usage of DSP power on the HD cards so it doesn't draw from the CPU - huge improvement over previous PT mix plus system for the money.
- great sound, great software, outstanding editing capability that's made PT famous.

I'm biased of course because it's what I use but honestly, I wouldn't consider any other DAW system out there for tracking/mixing with.

They improved a lot of things in the new system - it's not just the 192 (which I don't think that many people use).

I think the answers you got are the answers. HUI mode should work exactly as it always has. The converters on the HD should by all rights be better than the DA7's (because they're newer and more expensive) but I haven't heard them to confirm that. So the digital conversion chain depends on what sounds best. If you're using the DA7's converters, I doubt that any improvement in sound would be significant.
