Every so often when I'm working on a mix and I notice the phase meter swing over to out of phase or slightly out of phase, the thing is that sometimes it sounds better to me in that state than it does if I correct it to phase. So my question is: Is it Okay to produce it that way or will there be some side effects somewhere down the line that will cause problems. I'm aware of the lack of bass response and presence due to an out of phase signal but this is just that sometimes things sound better, will I screw something up by letting it pass?

Alot of that depends on how stoned you are dude. When your baked, out of phase sounds awesome, come to think of it, everything sounds awesome... Not speaking from experence of course, I read it in a gear slut mag..

Phase can be often be used creatively to drastically change the EQ of an instrument. E.G., if you've tracked bass with a mic and DI, when you mix, try reversing the phase of one of the signals, altering it's eq and combining it with the other signal. You can really alter the character of the instrument.(if that's what you desire or to fix an eq problem).--Dan

Phase problems can burn you if your material will ever be heard in mono. Run the mix in mono (thats why they put the button on the mixer) and see how it sounds. If it passes muster in mono, there will be no problems in stereo. Now there's 5.1.........
