What exactly does the loudness button on stereo systems do the the sound? I know it greatly increases the bass. Is it and EQ curve or what?

On most receivers/amps it is a bass boost only. On some it is a bass boost with a lesser degree of treble boost. Some have only an on/off switch and others have a continuously variable control. On others, like Yamaha equipment, the loudness control appears to be a midrange cut instead of a boost of any sort. That's why on their equipment you'll notice that the flat setting for their loudness control is full up, and loudness contouring occurs as you CUT the control.

It's basically a low pass (or high/mid shunt) filter that raises the low (and sometimes high also) frequencies at low listening levels. The filter is usually wired to a tap on the volume control, so it's effect decreases as the volume is turned up, and then disappears at about 2/3 or 3/4 the way up (like the bright switch on a Fender amp). This is to compensate for the Fletcher-Munsen curve, which states that the ear is less sensitive to extreme frequencies at low levels (stuff sounds thin when not cranked!).

Ya, but I can't be in the same room when my fENDER "tWIN" is at 2/3 or 3/4
(to hear the "bright" switch go away)

Tim,
Been there, Done that, but it hurts me sensitive little bones in me sensitive little ears. I guess I just gettin' old! (I used to be able to do it!) 30+ years of part time gtr playin' and full time side'o'stage monitor duty has taken it's toll!
Maybe that is why these near field monitors and I get along. I'm sure they don't go to 11

Yup....you reach a certain age when you gotta trade in your Twin for a Deluxe (but still get an assistant to go move the mic). Not just for your ears, but for carrying it to the gig too.
