How many Megabites per second is DV video?

The reason i'm asking is on the new Mac G4, I have 2- 100 ata slots and 2- 66 ata slots. The main drive with the OS is on a 100 ata slot which it does not really need to be on, I could move it to the 66 ata slot and use the faster buss on the board.

Is this a good idea or not even needed? Also, is all DVD's 48k? Should I record the audio for DVD projects at 48?

Jeremy,

Try this link: web page

Keep in mind, the spec is for Mega bits rather than Mega bytes per second.

Straight from my a$$, since I can't quote you the exact specs:

I wouldn't bother changing busses until you run into problems - which you're not likely to do with DV. And even then I don't think switching busses would make a difference.

The reason to use ATA/100 rather than /66 is only the more recent drives' seek time; contrary to almost all computer spec wankers, bandwidth (i.e. transfer rate) is rarely a relevant spec. DV isn't jumping all over the place, it's linear, so seek time isn't likely to make a big difference.

How are you using DV? Firewire? A capture card? Do you have audio going on at the same time?

There is audio but on another drive. It's no biggy, I could eaisly move the drives around.

BTW, i'm not talking about the drive itself, all my drives are 100 ata, it's the buss on the board.
2 are 66 and 2 are 100.

Thanks for the thread!!!25 megs a second.
I just completed my first DVD video of the Baltimore Aquarium. Did the music in Performer, it was nice having the video synced to the audio track. Now i'm hooked.

Jeremy, all DV audio is 48k 16-bit. This is NOT to be confused with what Tim was talking about with DVD-A... it's two different pieces of meat!

In fact, audio for ProVideo is also 48k, but DigitalBETA is 20-bit.

If you're primarily dealing with consumer grade stuff, keep it 48k 16-bit.

FYI

So video is recorded at 48k, that is the analog to digital conversion of the video as well as the audio is done at 48k. That means I need to record any backround music at 48k.

Is there a way to hook up my wz96 converter to my Sony Camera? Although it would be a hassel carring it around while i'm trying to film, and the generator to power it.

No, the 48K he's referring to is just for the audio portion. Video is different, but I don't know off-hand what it is. I'll see what I can find out.

Check this out: http://www.adobe.com/motion/events/pdfs/dvprimer.pdf

According to this link, the most common type of video compression used for DV is called DV25 and it has a fixed data rate of 25 megabits/second.

48k/16 at least explains the pops I get when running the sound through Final Cut Pro into the MOTU 2408 into the DA7 all at 44.1/16. Thanks for the info Eric.
