You take your FINISHED mix and duplicate.

Next, invert this duplication and reverse the panning.

Then you mix together (equal levels) your original with this new inverted/reverse-panned track and bounce (it's an extremely weird sound that appears 'outside' the speakers).

Next, import this bounced track and mix it in WITH the ORIGINAL MIX (i'm at about a 6 dB difference between the mix and this 'effect' track). Also, make sure to mute the inverted/reverse-panned track, as you won't need it at this point.

I'm using this effect on this "church-guy's" project - trio singing mostly with piano - hallelujah. It makes the overall sound wider than the speakers... weird.

Is this akin to installing MAC OS X on your PC? It's probably the same as that 'stereo enhancer' on T-RackS, that I hate.

Anyways, either hot tip for the day or bring back mono.

Now, let's all get back to those overly-exciting political topics.

Yes, an interesting effect, but beware of what your track may sound like now when you do listen in mono.

It's the "wide" switch on a boom box.

Would it disappear altogether, or just get that phasey under water sound?

Kind of reminds me of what Dave Moulton wrote about a few years back - monitoring a mix with channels A+B and A-B.

It dissapears if you don't reverse the panning (step one). It's not phasey either. It's 'outside' the speakers... not 'wider' than the placement of your monitors, but more in front. More of a religious experience, if ya know what I mean...

I'll post some samples tomorrow.

The 'church-guy' likes it, though. :p

An exact copy phase flipped and level matched should disappear.

"An exact copy phase flipped and level matched should disappear."

This is true.

However, if you reverse the panning of the 'inverted stereo track' and mix in an equal amount with the original stereo track, the sound moves out in front of the speakers. It has a 'ghostly' sound to it.

Bounce these two tracks together to create this 'Casper' track.

Then mix 'Casper', about 6 dB less, with the original stereo track.

I'll check later for 'mono' problems.

Anyways, I can't imagine this effect working well too often. I'm just using it with a vocal trio with piano.

No major MONO problems.

What happens is that this "Casper the Ghost" track dissappears when switched to mono and the original stereo track goes to mono.

Slight change in sound (just what would be expected going to mono) but nothing 'weird'.

I don't see how this effect can be achieved during mastering or after (i.e., the 'stereo enhancer' in T-RackS or a 'widen' switch on a boom-box).

Examples:

Mix

Casper the Ghost

Combined

Try them in MONO for kicks. Then you won't need to go to church afterwards.
