I'm not talking about faster CPUs and stuff like that but fidelity. Havn't you noticed how sound quality has gone down in newer productions? People don't want to hear slick sounding recordings anymore. Most of the younger generations are happy with MP3s in there ipods.

Yhea, until they're not (happy with mp3's in there(sp)ipods) It's just a trend and it will turn around eventually. Lo fi happens to be "cool" at the moment. At some point some "genius" producer (perhaps even one of the same ones who gave us the "new cool crappy sound"...) will come along with "slick hi fi" and good sounding recordings will be "cool" again ... After all "good" is in the ear of the beholder!

That's kind of a depressing outlook Jeremy. While I'm sure you're not alone in feeling this way, things are always changing and not always for the worse. Either way, your goal as a master recordist should always be to strive for the best possible recording. Shouldn't it?

Gee, all the engineers I know are still striving for great sounding records regardless of final medium.

Yhea, that's really the bottom line - at some point the "marketing machine" will make great sound a reason to buy music again.
