In honor of this momentous day, here's the coolest audio FLASH website you've ever seen:

And I guess that's why they don't want Flash. Too bad, because that's a big limitation.

I disabled flash in my browser as all the animated adds were annoying me.

I want to like it, I really do. But no camera, no Flash, too expensive. All deal killers for me.

I don't agree at all that $500 is too expensive, and I see absolutely no reason to use a fricking tablet computer as a camera.

But the most astute analysis I've read of it is that it's designed for consuming things, not creating them. I haven't seen one yet, but I'm willing to bet it does a great job in that way; Apple is very good at that.

There are already some interesting music applications for it:

iPad = iJoke

I plan to laugh heartily when all the "early adopters" finally get a chance to actually use it, and realize that their "magical" web browsing experience is a total joke, and they were again played as pawns in a huge, carefully calculated game.

The most astute analysis I've read of it is that anybody who actually buys this brick is a fool. A blind, vapid, ignorant fool.

Unfortunate, as a front-facing camera would actually give it a compelling feature for purchase.

Must be a lot of blind, vapid, ignorant fools in the world in that case. My bet? I think Apple has another hit on their hands, maybe not as big as the iPod and the iPhone, but a hit nonetheless.

I would find it beneficial for a live recording gig - having musicians read their charts from an iPad - instead of making noise each time they turn paper pages.

Mark, what would you use the front facing camera for?

And I don't know what you mean about people being vapid. From NYTimes.com:

Quote:
“It’s beyond technology. It’s a culture. It’s a community,” said Rey Gutierrez, a die-hard loyalist with a tattoo of the Apple logo on his left hand, who had waited outside the San Francisco Apple store since 4 a.m.

Personally, nothing at all. But there are these things these days called "webcams", and a lot of people use them for all sorts of things. You find them built into most all cutting-edge electronics these days.

Except for the iTampon.

Sure, you can hang a webcam off the top, and try to cinch down the wire as best you can to where it plugs into the adapter that then plugs into the unit... Setting new standards of ease of use! Lowering them.

I have a webcam on top of my computer monitor and another one built into my laptop. And a camera in my iPhone, and a real digital camera, and a really good film camera I haven't used for years, and a 70-year-old Leica.

Why do I need a tampon with one?

Holy Moley Josef!

You just gave me a great reason to consider the purchase of an iPad.
I'm doing a lots of jazz gigs and I'm carrying a bunch of books.
One iPad might replace 20 pounds of charts.
Thanks for the insight.
I suspect there will be many other cool uses for this device.

Thanks

Who was the first company to offer a built-in webcam on their computers, Mark? Care to take a guess? As a matter of fact, who got there first most of the time?

I've subbed a few times as a bass player in a band that uses those LCD chart pads.
Amazing tech. Tons of charts, sortable by user defined set lists, pages turn with a foot pedal.
If the I-pad can do the same functions then I'd imagine it'll be quite popular for that use as it's price point is less than 1/2 of those.

I can't remember the name of those things. I do know they're red.........

I'm not so sure about that. Think of how often your music hits the floor on gigs and picture your tablet in it's place. smile

The small one . Though I could have sworn it was red not black. Maybe they just gave me an etch-a-sketch........

Looks as if the price is down to $899 for that one, but still that's $400 more than an i-pad with a ton more memory and features.
The deal breaker might be it's size. Only 9.7 inch screen vs. 12.1 on the Freehand pro.

Let's keep it real here...

(AP) Cupertino, CA 04-05-2010:0947GMT For Immediate Release
Apple Inc. said today that it sold more than 300,000 iPads on its opening day, meeting the expectations of some analysts while underscoring the challenges the company still faces marketing the much-anticipated device beyond early adopters.

"Move the unit closer to the Wi-Fi router or hot spot and make sure the Wi-Fi router is plugged in and the power is turned on."

Makes you wonder how many of those 300,000 units sold are being returned and refunded today...

I'm sitting in the San Francisco airport right now waiting for a plane to Australia, typing this on my MacBook Pro tethered to my iPhone's 3G service. It really works well.

Meanwhile my Apple stock is up to 239, their market cap is $215 billion, and Mark is pregnant with Steve Jobs' love child.

As soon as there is a Max/MSP version for iPad I'm going to Best Buy with bells on. The device has the potential to be a $400 box that could do what the Jazzmutant Lemur does. I would also immediately scan all of my charts and sheet music into it (like those expensive things Herbie Hancock and Peter Gabriel always use. I forget the name...) so that I'm not always carrying around my binders. I could also see it greatly decreasing my travel carry on as it would immediately replace my MacBook Pro, (since most of the time it only functions as an email/Hulu/Netflix box when I travel as a player) the power supply for the computer, and on average 2-3 books.

Another interesting thing that I read today is that the FAA said you don't have to take an iPad out of your bag for security like laptops because of the way the innards are arranged. Now if they could only realize that you similarly would have trouble putting a bomb in Chuck Taylors… wink

And also interesting, I read a rumor today that multi-tasking is coming to iPhone and iPad with tomorrow afternoon's software update. I think that is going to prove more useful on iPad than iPhone, but I guess you could stay signed into an IM program and take a call for instance… And also the ability to print from iPhone/iPad.

Thanks Josef. So far being in Melbourne feels surprisingly unlike being in a foreign country.

Dan, I think they have to have multitasking. If you have to quit your word processor to check something online, it's a non-starter as a laptop replacement.

Yeah. Agreed. I'm sure that Apple is doing the same thing they did with iPhone: get it out there into as many peoples' hands as possible as soon as possible with 100% working features, and then keep adding additional features with software updates when you're sure they don't suck.

There is a background task enabler that has been floating around the Jailbreak community for years, so I'm sure it's can't be that hard to implement in the OS itself.

Apple now says it was 300,000 units SHIPPED. Seeing as how they state very clearly that Apple Stores are still "quite well stocked", the actual number of sales was far less.

Joe, have you ever used WinMo on a smartphone? It sucks! I chose the old Palm OS over it when I had my Treo - and that OS was like an early '80s toy.

As a matter of fact, I've been using it on my last 2 phone .. over the past 4 years. I am running major business applications on it. I am running over 400 trucking transactions a day at one of my customers sites. Never a problem.

I have actually remote desktop'd into my console at a show to set monitor EQ's using it. I have several background apps running, and probably 8 email accounts on my current one.

I'm starting to have issues with the touch screen, but that isn't the OS - it's the fact that the phone has been beaten to death for the past 2 years!

And yes, I looked at the Palm, as well as blackberry - no freaking way. I can just take my desktop apps and port them down the the mobile and run off the same source code base - try that with any other phone.

I'm talking about the Palm TREO - the old toy smartphone. Its OS was way easier to get around than Windows Mobile. The phone came in both versions - you could choose and it was the same price.

Note that I'm not even talking about the iPhone OS, which from a user perspective makes everything that came before it look stupid.

Your quote was very FoxNews-like omitting ....

"For every complaint in Apple's support forum, however, there were hundreds more posts across the web praising the new device. Technology blog forums and reviews for iPad apps in the iTunes App Store were full of positive comments about the device."

"Aside from bumping it this morning putting in the car, and therefore causing a dent on the side, my experience has been pretty decent," wrote iPad purchaser Kenly Neufeld on technology blog ReadWriteWeb.

"Weeping with joy! It's the reason I bought the iPad," wrote peruke after purchasing the NetFlix Application for his iPad.

Of course - the fanbois love their shiny piece of glass that they can show off to their brain-dead hipster buddies... nobody disputes that. It's the latest status symbol brought forth from the heavens by their messiah.

The people whose opinions I actually care about have done a fine job of documenting the iTampon's crippling shortcomings.

Hope you're all ready for iAd. Sounds perfectly dreadful to me.

If it were up to Mark, the only tool that would exist would be the Swiss Army Knife. Everything else would be iStupid, and anyone who bought anything that doesn't do as many things would be a fanboy with no brain.

It's amazing how Apple managed to amass $30 billion in cash selling stuff only to fools all around the world.

Oh, don't be so dramatic, Nick. If the iPad actually had a compelling feature or two, things would be quite different. My house is filled with high-tech toys. I'm sure yours is too.

As it is, the iPad sets new standards in locked-down, inclusive, completely controlled computing. I just don't see how that benefits anybody except Apple shareholders.

I just cannot fathom how Apple has the balls to promote it as simpler and easier to use, when everything I've read about trying to get files on and off the thing sounds like neurosurgery. If it were truly user-friendly, they would have at least put an SD slot and a webcam in it. Just those 2 simple features would have meant a world of difference.

As it is, it's a joke. And if I were the only person saying that, you could label me a whackjob and leave it at that. But once you get outside the Vapid Zone (aka California), nobody really gives a shit about it.

man, you're on a tirade.
did you lose an apple or something?

as a Californian, i resent the vapid zone bs.

since you are practically the only person who seems to be personally confronted by the ipad, i will call you a whackjob (when it comes to apple anyway.)

Who the hell is I Cringely? Some fanboi, no doubt. When a company has insanely lucrative profit margins, as Apple so famously does - something would be wrong if they didn't acquire obscene profits. How this is good news for consumers, or signifies that Apple is somehow more "innovative" than any other company, is baffling to me.

"imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Of course you are referring to Steve Jobs' famous, well documented visit to Xerox Parc in 1979 where he saw the first GUI and mouse, which are very well documented as being Xerox innovations. The first Mac debuted in 1984.

Apple really hasn't innovated anything since the original Apple II, if you think about it. Other companies were making GUIs, mp3 players, cell phones, laptops and tablet computers before them.

Apple's key to success is marketing, pure and simple. If that sort of thing impresses you, so be it. Everything else is debatable.

"Kinda fun" is a reasonable assessment. It's when words like "magical" start getting tossed around... that tends to set off my BS alarm.

Apple promotes the iPad as "the best way to experience the web". I was looking at apple.com... they actually have an entire section devoted to which popular websites display properly on the iPad. Just thinking about that makes my head hurt.

As soon as Apple ships an iPad that actually is magical, I'll actually consider buying one. Until then, it's just a shiny piece of glass that's all wobbly when you try to type on it.

Wireless HUI emulation for the iPad. I'll be interested to see what people say, but for me, if this works, there's simply no question that it will make sense to buy one.

Love or hate the iPad, this is very cool:

Best part is it's only $10, not including the iPad of course.

A dedicated mic stand bracket would be nice too. I like the Frontier TranzPort... but I do think the iPad+ProRemote on a little stand would really kick ass.

Did you read his last paragraph?

"April 14: Yes, I'm still using the iPad
I've been adapting to the iPad's niggles for two weeks and I will continue to. It's a fun and beautiful device, and it is actually useful both at work and at home. Although my affection for this device is tempered by the expanding list of annoyances, I'm hanging on to it in the hope, which I think is reasonable, that most of these issues will get fixed. That's the price you pay for drinking the Kool-Aid. I mean, being an early adopter."

I know you hate Apple, but I think this will be a game changer.
They will fix all of the stuff that he is complaining about.
C'mon, 1st generation of any new tech is always imperfect.

At this point, I have no inclination to buy one, but I bet in a year or so, I will.

Mark, let's get to the bottom of this (not in the gay sense): why do you get crazy every time Apple comes out with something? Were you sodomized with a Mac Plus or something?

I mean, I'm not particularly interested in the Super Bowl, but I don't go crazy posting that there are far better entertainment values, people who like football are all cultists, the game will never make any money compared to soccer, and so on.

Nick, I've already clearly outlined just some the shortcomings I see concerning the iTampon. You apparently haven't been actually reading my posts, as usual. You don't care what I think - all you do is skim posts for keywords and concepts to argue against in futility.

This just in:

And:

It's Official! Californians Are Apple's Bitch!

But anyways, back to the original topic: This Flash site is insanely fun! And it'll NEVER run on an iPad - the "best way to experience the web!®"

I love how anytime Apple "Invents" something that already exists, people can call it "1st Generation".
They repackage everyone else's ideas and call it new. Just because they have a superior MARKETING ENGINE, does not make them trendsetters.

I'm sure if I wanted to, I could dumb down my 2 year old tablet to do what an iPad does - but why would I want to?!
There are all kinds of apps to make my phone look like an iPhone and hide all of it's features, but why would I want to?

I read your posts, Mark, and they're retarded. My question is why you do this every time Apple is mentioned. You've been doing this since this board started. Same thing with Pro Tools.

Joe, Apple didn't invent the tablet computer nor do they claim to have done so. What they do is design products to make them appealing to lots of people, and it's YOUR shortcoming that you don't see that. Mark's shortcoming too.

So Mark and Joe, I'm sure you both have gone to an Apple store and messed around with the iPad.
You're both slamming it pretty hard, so I'm assuming that you have actually checked it out in person.
It must suck pretty bad.

That being said, I don't get the high emotional content.
Personally, I don't give a rat's pitooty about the iPad.
It looks kind of cool, but I'm not compelled to buy one.

Mark you keep mocking the word "magical".

As an older human, I find all of this stuff "magical".
The ability to record audio on to hard drives.
Please consider what is going on under the hood.
The high power computers that we average folks can purchase.
These are supercomputers compared to the state of the art only a few years ago.
The fact that I can run huge amounts of VIs and plugins and record unlimited audio at 96k/24 bit and have 12 terabytes of storage.
Compared to what was possible when I was starting out, I do consider it "magical"

I know it is not magic.
It is high level math and design.
Any current system, Mac or PC is an amazing amalgam of so many small steps, so many discoveries and inspirations.
I consider it miraculous.

I welcome new design and innovation.

Why bash?

What appeals to me about Apple's offerings is that I don't have to know what's going on under the hood. Their stuff simply works. To a non-techy end-user that's simply golden. I do some back and forth work with a friend of mine who as the same ProTools system I do with the exception that he's running on Windows. It seems like every other time we try to do something at his studio there's a problem. He can't open my files (I have no problem opening his) or some other thing is goofy.

As to the iPad, I don't know if I'll get one or not, but if it looks like it'll make my life better, make certain jobs easier (the control surface emulators come to mind), hell yes. Just as soon as they release the second generation.

Here's Nick doing his Homer Simpson impression again - "Everybody's stupid except for me."

Although from what I've seen on YouTube, amongst all the "iPad FAIL" videos, is that cats apparently are fascinated by shiny things as well as their owners. So I will give you that one: the iPad IS a magical, game changing cat toy.

I know you fanbois are getting pretty desparate for validation these days. I wish I had better news... but as more and more respected reviewers pan your little cat toy etch-a-sketch, and more hidden technical limitations are revealed, it's clear. The writing is on the wall. Apple whiffed this time.

And the joke is made all the more cruel when you realize that if they had only done a few key things differently, it would be a whole different scenario. If only they'd put in that $10 webcam and $5 USB slot... if only Jobs didn't have that pathological hatred of Adobe... if only the iPad were actually capable of the things Apple claims it can do.

magical!

Mark, it's not that you don't have valid points. What people are asking you is why is your reaction always so over-the-top negative whenever it comes to anything Apple? You still haven't answered the question. Ever since I started visiting this forum, I knew if there was a post about Apple, it wouldn't be long before you'd come ranting. You act like you're personally insulted by the company. It's just a computer! Even if the iPad had a camera and a USB port you would still be complaining about it.

I went to a local Apple store the other day to look at the new laptops. I ventured over to the iPad display, really not wanting to like it. Picked it up, played with it and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Yes, its not the answer to everything (or anything, for that matter). Its just a very well designed, fun device. I give Apple credit for taking risks. It is a home run? Nah. But who cares. Will I buy one? Maybe. Maybe not. Again, who cares. Will there be apps, upgrades, wireless and phone options that will make this a more desirable device? Very likely.

It will definitely find its place in our lives... or even music studios - BUT! Other than all the kids gadgetry, I wish that Apple would put more of its effort to supporting their loyal hardcore PRO users, who kept Mac afloat in their rough years. For example - cutting off Logic / PPC users at version 9.0.2 is very unfortunate. Since the Logic 9 came out as an Universal Binary, they should finish it as such... and go the Intel only version from L10! WTF?!

For Mark K. ONLY.

A Byte Out of Apple

No doubt, Bill Gates realized how profitable a successful GUI for IBM computers would be. He had seen Apple's Lisa computer and later the more successful Macintosh or Mac computer. Both Apple computers came with a stunning graphical user interface.

As a new product, Microsoft Windows faced potential competition from IBM's own Top View, and others. VisiCorp's short-lived VisiOn, released in October 1983, was the official first PC-based GUI. The second was GEM (Graphics Environment Manager), released by Digital Research in early 1985. Both GEM and VisiOn lacked support from the all-important third-party developers. Since, if nobody wanted to write software programs for an operating system, there would be no programs to use, and nobody would want to buy it.
Microsoft finally shipped Windows 1.0 on November 20, 1985, almost two years past the initially promised release date.

Microsoft Windows version 1.0 was considered buggy, crude, and slow. This rough start was made worse by a threatened lawsuit from Apple Computers. In September 1985, Apple lawyers warned Bill Gates that Windows 1.0 infringed on Apple copyrights and patents, and that his corporation stoled Apple's trade secrets. Microsoft Windows had similar drop-down menus, tiled windows and mouse support.

Deal of the Century

Bill Gates and his head counsel Bill Neukom, decided to make an offer to license features of Apple's operating system. Apple agreed and a contract was drawn up. Here's the clincher: Microsoft wrote the licensing agreement to include use of Apple features in Microsoft Windows version 1.0 and all future Microsoft software programs. As it turned out, this move by Bill Gates was as brilliant as his decision to buy QDOS from Seattle Computer Products and his convincing IBM to let Microsoft keep the licensing rights to MS-DOS.

Windows 1.0 floundered on the market until January 1987, when a Windows-compatible program called Aldus PageMaker 1.0 was released. PageMaker was the first WYSIWYG desktop-publishing program for the PC. Later that year, Microsoft released a Windows-compatible spreadsheet called Excel. Other popular and useful software like Microsoft Word and Corel Draw helped promote Windows, however, Microsoft realized that Windows needed further development.

On December 9, 1987, Microsoft released a much-improved Windows version 2.0 that made Windows based computers look more like a Mac.

The gift that keeps on giving! This time it's from THE WALL STREET JOURNAL:

Princeton, Cornell and GWU All Ban Buggy iPad From Their Networks!

and

iPad Struggles For Acceptance at US Colleges

Choice quote: "Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa., had promised free iPads and MacBooks to all incoming freshmen next fall. But most of Seton Hill's 2,145 students will now have to pay up to $800 a year in additional technology fees for an expanded wireless network and support system. And Seton Hill says students will still need to buy textbooks."

Kluth, why do you waste your time with this? You seem like a pretty reasonable guy, but this borders on pathetic. Did you lose a ton of stock money with Apple in the mid-80's? No insult intended, but this is pretty obsessive, no?

You could have lost Apple stock in the mid-'90s too! Their survival was nowhere near certain at one point.

But right now it's on a fricking tear. We only have 15 shares - our gambling money - but they went from 135 to 200 to 90 to almost 250 now.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't blown away by the iPad when I tried it in the Apple Store. But the first 30" monitor and the first iPhone weren't enough to entice me either, and now they're my favorite toys.

Update: The stock has re-opened for trading; AAPL is now up $17.41, or 7.1%, to $262. That gives the company a market cap of about $238 billion.

Update 2: Here are some key tidbits from the post-earnings analyst call:

CFO Peter Oppenheimer says the company was “thrilled” with the results.
Revenue was up 49% from a year ago, with iPhone more than doubling, and Mac sales strong.
Net income was up 90% from a year ago.
Mac sales were a record for a March quarter. Strong double-digit growth in both desktop and portable segments. There is 3-4 weeks of Mac channel inventories.
iPod sales driven by Touch - Touch units were up 63% year over year. 12% growth in iPod revenue growth, strongest in late 2 years.
$1.1 billion in iTunes store revenue in the quarter. Over 12 million songs. Over 10 billion songs sold market crossed in February.
Ended the quarter in 4-6 weeks of iPod inventory.
On iPhone, had best quarter ever. 131% year over year growth. More 3x IDC estimate of smart phone growth in the quarter. ASP was about $600 for the iPhone. Now have distribution with 151 carriers in 88 countries.
iPhone OS 4 response from developers has been strong.
On iPad, the company is “pleased” with results so far. On track for 3G ship on April 30. Both versions in nine more countries at end of May.
$1.68 billion revenue from Apple stores in the quarter. Now 286 stores. There was $5.9 million revenue per store, up from $5.5 million a year ago. On track for 40-50 new stores in FY 2010.
41.7% gross margin was 270 basis points above guidance. Stronger product mix helped, as well as lower costs, and fixed-cost leverage from higher revenue.
24% tax rate in the March quarter was lower than expected.
Cash was up $1.9 billion from the previous quarter. They continue to focus on preservation of capital, with focus on short-dated high quality investments.
For the June quarter, they expect gross margin to be 36%. A quarter of that is from first quarter of iPad sales. They have been aggressive on pricing. Expect rest of margin decline to be due roughly equally from a stronger dollar; the Mac portable transition; the start of education buying season; and a future product transition. (New iPhones, maybe?)

Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, said there are no production problems with the iPad. The international launch has been delayed only because of demand in the U.S., where Apple said it sold more than 500,000 iPads in its first week.

Today's WSJ:

Apple Inc.'s quarterly profit surged 90%, leaving little doubt that consumers are opening their wallets to buy the hottest tech gadgets as the economy improves.

Apple's revenue in the quarter rose 49% to $13.5 billion, as consumers snatched up its iPhones, iPods and Macintosh computers.

Apple said the results were driven by more than twice as many iPhone shipments compared with a year ago. Revenue from the phones made up 40% of Apple's total business.

"We're thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter revenue ever," Chief Executive Steve Jobs said.

There you guys go again, praising Apple for ripping off their users with insane profit margins... like this somehow signifies how AWESOME they are.

All it actually signifies is that they have an entire generation of drooling idiots at their beck and call that will automatically purchase anything they produce - whether they need it or not - or they won't be perceived as being hip enough to their drooling idiot buddies.

But everybody already knew that.

Come on, Hopi, you know Mark is right: the only reason Apple sells their miserable crap in such quantities is that consumers all over the world are stupid. People don't bother researching multi-thousand dollar purchases - they just want to be hip.

Looks like we're seeing the beginning of the end for Apple... The iPad is a huge misstep and this Gizmodo thing is spinning out of control.

Nick's Pal Jon Stewart thinks they're total douchebags!

I didn't click on the link, but it's the asshole who sold the prototype that didn't belong to him and the Gizmodo bigger asshole who paid him and then spewed trade secrets to the public who are total douchebags. And note that this isn't a civil suit, it's the police investigating *a crime.* I'm glad.

How much do you want to bet about this being the end for Apple? I'd love to take your money.

I've noticed that your responses, Mark, never seem to be direct. You insult peoples' intelligence and you talk in sweeping generalities. I've mentioned elsewhere in this thread why I'm an Apple user and what I think might be useful about the iPad in my life, and also when it might be useful. No response whatsoever to any of my specific points, or anyone else's that I could see. Bring something real, something tangible to the discussion and people might take you seriously. So far you're simply acting like a pathetic fool. I think you're not interested in a discussion about much of anything. I'm open minded; if I find something that'll work better (or the same and cheaper) for my purposes, I'm there, man. But you haven't shown anything at all besides complaints about shiny things. Got any real arguments. I for one would like to hear them.

More light reading from TheMacObserver:

Lack of Flash Cripples iPad As Travel Device

Choice quote: "...when I took it on vacation with me and attempted to use it as my laptop replacement it failed miserably because of this one issue."

Choice quote #2: "And let’s face it, if Apple truly believed that Flash wasn’t a necessary component of our daily browsing lives they wouldn’t ship Mac OS X with the plug-in preinstalled, now would they?"

It's NOT a laptop replacement. Same for quote #2.

What do you think about its HUI emulation, Mark? That is what I find most appealing. In any event, as I would do with any new purchase (from Apple or anyone else) I'll be waiting at least until the second generation. Imagine that! Bugs in a brand new device! Who'd have thunk it?

I've come to the conclusion that we're missing the point, olguitar. It's not about Apple or their products, it's about Mark enjoying getting a rise out of suckers like me. That's why he ignores reason; everyone who likes anything Apple makes is a Swaggart zombie.

Just for the record, the lack of Flash support isn't a "bug" or "feature for version 2" - it is a deliberate move on Apple's part to not allow it on "their" device. Plain and simple.

As long as they can dictate what is "allowed" to run on their device, they can never be thought of as full machines. They are devices that you lease from Apple for a crazy price - kinda like buying a townhome and then having to listen to an association tell you what color door mat you must have. I never understood people that would put up with that either.

I find it interesting that nobody seriously tries to run Mac OS on a Windows PC (yes, I know all about hackintosh), but at least half of the Mac people I know have to run XP on it, or carry a second machine.

There's already a lot of things a Mac can't do ... and this machine is even MORE stripped down.

Of course this machine is stripped down. So is an iPhone. It's not pretending to be anything else. That doesn't mean I'm running out to buy one or that I don't wish it had Flash - I'm just saying.

But what can't a Mac do? OS X is an excellent operating system at this point, and their hardware is very competitive. The 27" iMac is a gorgeous piece of design, for example.

So, If someone loses something, isn't it lost?

If you are walking down the street and find something and pick it up, the good Samaritan thing may be to find an owner.. but is it a criminal offense not to return it?

Just watched the Stewart clip on the link that was posted.
The title of the link is rather disingenuous in that it's quite apparent Jon is still a fan of Apple.

After some research I've decided to buy an I-pad for my wife. She only needs something to check email with and do some browsing. Since it's not flash compatible I won't need to install extra software to block all the annoying flash animation that IMO is close to ruining the online experience.

Jeff, this mofo found a phone at a bar that didn't belong to him. He knew exactly what it was and sought out Gizmodo, who paid him $5000 for something that didn't belong to him. The prick at Gizmodo took apart a prototype that didn't belong to him and proceeded to broadcast Apple's proprietary trade secrets all over the fricking internet.

There's no law in this country against being an asshole, but if this isn't illegal then it sure as hell should be.

And you're wrong. The owner of the phone is still the owner of the phone even if he leaves it at a bar by mistake.

Nick, relax... I didn't say he was in the right. I know they knew what they had.. obviously they were working it and the right thing to do is to return something someone has lost.

I am just asking If its a criminal offense. And.. something worthy of criminal investigation.. the schmo did LOSE it after all.

The right thing would be to return the phone but hey we are all curious. I doubt any trade secrets were unveiled .... but the dude took it out of the office (was he supposed to beta test it) and left it at a bar.

Apple likes control (like most ... just as Microsoft and Internet Explorer) but if Apple gets too big the government just might break'em up or fine them for not allowing other apps to run on their device/OS.

Apple bought Emagic, Soundjam (this became itunes) and developed Aperture. (I like Lightroom better).

What could be Apples' motive? Control and profits (the new Ma Bell?) or simply to make a better more stable product

How about everything that people are forced to run XP to do. Certainly they don't load XP on a mac because the prefer it smile

I have several XP machines, and they're great for streaming samples. Vista under Boot Camp is really annoying for little reasons to do with BIOS being emulated (such as not all your drives showing up), but it works okay.

I know, I'd run Windows 7 if I had it. MS sent me Vista to test audio programs on, and it works pretty well.

Joe, how about some examples? I haven't found anything in my admittedly sheltered life that I can't do on a Mac. I'd seriously like to know.

Almost any control program for pro audio only runs on PC's - the reason I always see people with either the second machine or Xp on macs. Seriously, why would anyone that hates Windows so much be running it if they didn't HAVE to?!

Joe, God created a pile of 7-year-old Windows machines (worth $50 on the used market) for just that purpose: running XP software. I run Giga, Halion, and older EastWest libraries on them, and they're great.

Oh my goodness. Look what I just found on a Mac Swaggart Zombie site:

http://www.macworld.com/article/150989/2010/05/ipad_million.html

Apple sells a million iPads in under a month. When in history has another company been so good at duping so many idiots who aren't as smart as Mark Kluth?

Hmmm. The name Barnum comes to mind. Nice to see some traditions never change.

It is obvious that you've never read a biography of Barnum. I'd expect nothing less.

Did you guys see this?

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rebirth/id368199125?mt=8

It is the same version of ReBirth that there always was. As in they didn't rewrite anything. They just ported the old program to the mobile OS. Funny to think that my phone has the same processing power of the computer I used to play with ReBirth on with my Dad.

Anyway, it's only $6.99. Gonna check out the Korg app too.

And this is real cool (I have the transport control iPhone app from the same guy that was only a couple of bucks) but $99.99?! He's smoking something… With an app like this you need to lower the price to make it accessible to impulse buyers because no one actually needs something like this. (Because if you really did, you could easily find a better control surface option than $500 for an iPad and $100 for this software.)

I see absolutely no reason to use a fricking tablet computer as a camera.

But the mostipad 2 keyboard dock astute analysis I've read of it is that it's designed for consuming things, not creating them.
ipad2 keyboard cases I haven't seen one yet, but I'm willing to bet it does a great job in that way; Apple is very good at that.
