I don't think I'll ever own one but way back I heard a girl sing through a C12 and it was beautiful (or maybe it was the girl)

What I own: Royer 121, Red A or B with the 6 cap, SM7 and 57 (bought the 57 in 78 so thats vintage for some folks )

SM7, SM57, Senn 421, Senn e602, Senn e906, Cascade Fat Head. I too have also had some great fun with a vintage C12's and I'd love to own a valve and FET U47's...

I've also done some great tracking with an MXL V69. Cheap mic, but its sounds great.

I have no favorites.

But a Behringer B5 works just fine on a hihat - $90.

SM57 works on everything.

Save your money - you'll need it.

My favorite mics are two Zentecs designed by Howard Gale. They are tube condenser mics with a custom power supply. Better than the classic M-49 and C-12. I also use Royer 121, 122, Manley tube, custom 414, etc. However, my favorite Vocal/Scoring mic is my classic Brauner VM-I which I don't like on Horns. Since I don't record Vocals or Scoring It will soon be on Ebay.

From the mics I currently own, my Rode K2 is my current favorite for vocals.

I hear so many good things about the M-Audio Sputnik I really would love to get my hands on one.

Rode K2s are garbage. Might as well go with a 57 if that matters..

I've done some tracking with a Soundelux iFET. That mic sounded good for what we were using it for. I really liked it on a bass cabinet and a kick drum in FET 47 "mode." Definitely cool for other things beyond that too. What is the U195 like?

I like companies like Soundelux, Peluso, and Cascade because they make mics that sound fantastic for a variety of situations depending on what you are doing (even when A/B'd to mics that you'd typically think to use in that situation) and they don't completely kill your budget. Some of ya'll don't have to worried about that as much as I do—and that's awesome—but I haven't gotten my Grammy yet, so a U47 or ELAM251 is a little out of practical reach... ;\)

Anybody done tracking with Schoeps 221? I've heard good things and I love the fact that its a VALVE cardioide condenser with fantastic sonics. It seems that I am generally happiest using a valve mic and a solid state pre-amp for most things excluding percussive high-SPL sources like close mic'ed drums etc... Well, and ribbons. I love me some ribbons.

A Neumann U87 sounds great on lots of things, which is why it's as ubiquitous in studios as the 57 is everywhere! I wish I still had one! I have a TLM-103 and its good but just not as silky sounding as the U87...

Apart from that I have a pair of Rode NT5s which are pretty good general purpose mics, esp when used as an XY pair.

Haven't tried KM184s, anyone compared them to KM84s?

I had a guy offer me a new KM184 for my old KM84. I didn't go for it - found out later that people are paying about 4 times the price of a new 184 for the old 84.

Hate to be a broken record but once again -check out:
http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/f/33/0/

Klaus comments on the 84 vs the 184 - if you do a search you will find it.
