I know that wasn't Yes... but Yes was my favorite band growing up and Steve Howe was the reason I got into music... and of course Chris Squire was my favorite bass player. I used to love the bass/guitar lines in Long Distance Runaround.

Thanks for posting that Glenn.... brought back memories.

cheers,

AK

oh yeah... in the right hands, a Rick bass can sound awesome.

Willing to accept donations.

True, it might not have been Yes, but Bruford and Moraz were no slouches on Squire's solo effort.

Funny I just put that CD on the iPod (couple days ago).

Friend still has his Red & White Rick (bought in 78) still plays it though.

I thought I was gonna miss Wakeman until I saw them live with Moraz on the Relayer tour (Anaheim stadium with Gentle Giant, Gary Wright, and Peter Frampton). They opened with "Gates": game over.
Of course, Patrick shredded on Sound Chaser! I remember thinking though that his ARP was thinner sounding that Rick's Moog.

Steve was one of my big guitar influences too (It was hard to find other cats who wanted to play Close To The Edge at high school parties though). He has an incredible ability to come up with the most complex stuff, while still keeping it melodic, lyrical, rock 'n roll, and childlike.

I never got into Rush though. Great players they were, but their music didn't move me at all.

Fish out of Water was a good record... and you guys are showing your age.
CS surely had cool Ric tone. My fav bass line. Heart of the Sunrise. The one after the main theme where the mellotron enters \:\) Advent of CD's kinda spoiled the honed art of lifting the stylus up by hand. Then placing it back on the record where ya wanted it. Especially precarious while holding a joint in the other hand.

Geddy's not a leftie.

"After the Beatles 1965 summer tour, Paul McCartney frequently used a left-handed 1964 4001S FG Rickenbacker bass since its tone was better suited to recording than the lightweight Hofner basses he had used previously."

Love "Relayer!" one of my favorites too...

Kind of grew away from Rush, but love the early stuff - "Fly by Night," "Caress of Steel," "2112"...
Saw the "All the World's a Stage" tour in '76 (I think), and those guys made a LOT of music for a trio.

No. I had that issue back when I was 18, but haven't heard of her since. I remember something about her being hooked up with Gene Simmons at the time.

I did a couple of albums up at Le Studio in Morin Heights - my room had that "Geddy" smell to it... Brut and mullet. ;\)

Glenn, did you get those isolated 'Sgt. Pepper' tracks that Tim posted? You can here McCartney playing that beautiful Ric bass (pictured above) in all it's hissy, amped (Vox 430 or Vox 730 or blonde Fender Bassman?) glory or D/I (Geoff Emmerick denies using one, but Ken Townsend says McCartney did). Not to mention just plain ol' great bass lines.

Vox 430

Vox 730 (most likely this one)

Fender Bassman with Ric 4001S and Epiphone Casino

I've had those tracks a couple for a couple of years now. The ones I have are less hissy and clearer (probably closer to the original). They've been going around for a while, along with some Queen, Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye ("What's Goin' On" is stunning), some other Motown stuff. Great fun to hear the source tracks - and all the mistakes ;\)

"Beach Boys"?

Any Carol Kaye isolated tracks?

I have a lot of the Motown/Jamerson stuff, too. Very good.

The Beach Boys tracks are reductions, so no separate bass.

Sean, surprised you don't have them, they've been going around for a while. Be patient, they will show up. The surprise will be how poorly recorded most of this sounds by today's standards. Musicianship is good, but not nearly as accurate. However, when its all mixed together, it sounds indescribably delicious.
